Itinerary:
Day Three
West Coast Trail to Barclay Sound
After a delightful Canadian breakfast we board our plane and are on our way to Nootka Island Camp. We fly over Bamfield, the Northern Terminus of the West Coast Trail, and the Broken Island Group in Barkley Sound. The captain will help you search for a possible sighting of the Great Whales, who migrate along these shores either on their way to Baja, California (Mexico) or on their way to the Aleutians in the Arctic.
We make a lunch stop at Hot Springs Cove, where we also hike one kilometer to the Hot Springs. Be sure to bring your bathing suit and you can change in a "hanging dressing room" which we suspended from a tree!
After our lunch and a refreshing swim, we continue north to Nootka Sound. There we will meet with Tim and Sandy Cyr, the owners and operators of the Fishing Camp. Discovered by Captain Cook in 1778, this area is truly Super Natural British Columbia. During our boat cruise we will visit the spot of the first contact between the Europeans and First Nations people at Yoquot (Friendly Cove) and retrace the footsteps of B.C.'s early explorers such as Captain Cook and Captain Bligh (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame.) As well, we visit the Governor General Totem and a quaint early church.
There will also be time for battling a King (Tyee) salmon up to 60 lbs., or a fighting Coho in excess of l5 lbs. There are plenty of salmon, chinook and coho ready to be hooked and caught in the serenity and seclusion of uncrowded fishing grounds. Although salmon is the camp's specialty, there are also Ling Cod, Red Snapper, Rock Cod and the succulent Halibut. After a full day in the wilderness and a hearty meal we can retire to our comfortable rooms.
